Garmin is the name most often associated with GPS. Garmin leads the market in sales and offers more GPS products than any other company.
City Select is easy to use because it is simple, straightforward and does not offer many map customization options or extras. The program makes it effortless to transfer data between the software and your GPS unit.
Garmin City Select is only compatible with Garmin GPS locators and is often included with the purchase of high–end GPS systems. City Select is a streamlined program with automatic route generation, multiple route calculation, detailed turn–by–turn directions, and an undo button. City Select makes it easy for you to experiment and build a custom route.
City Select includes over five million POI, more than any other program that we reviewed. Each category of POI is split into sub–categories that include brief descriptions and often contact information. It also has the capability to allow the user to add their own POI.
City Select has no draw tools to add text, freehand images, illustrations or notes to your maps.
Garmin City only has a compass and status box that runs while your GPS locator is active.
We didn't encounter any problems installing City Select.
Garmin offers a tutorial on how to upload data and maps as well as a helpful setup guide. They offer technical support through phone and email. However, after two months, we never received an email response to multiple inquiries to customer support, technical support and sales. We found this lack of response frustrating.
MapSource City Select will get you from point A to point B, but so could a paper map. The only things MapSource City Select offer that paper maps do not is GPS compatibility and POI. For less money, we'd recommend DeLorme's Street Atlas USA 2006.
