Des Newman's OziExplorer allows you to create GPS-compatible maps from purchased digital maps or scanned maps. This may be useful for creating GPS-compatible maps of any location in the world. Finding accurate maps for locations worldwide is more challenging than finding rural US topography.
OziExplorer was the most difficult for us to use because using the software is quite similar to starting with a plain map. Any detail, routes, or POI have to be added.
OziExplorer is for rural adventure travel only; the program does not include city grids or streets. OziExplorer allows you to plan your trip on your computer by plotting waypoints and routes that can be uploaded to your GPS.
OziExplorer can search through POI you enter by coordinates or POI name.
>Map customization is OziExplorer's purpose. You can create custom routes, tracks, mark POI and attach notes. The program has a night vision feature to assist with nocturnal travel and you can check your distance and bearings from a predetermined mark.
Objects can be dragged and moved across the map and a 3-D mode is available with an add-on product called OziExplorer 3-D. You can create a 3-D map from any map with OziExplorer, as long as you have elevation data for the region.
OziExplorer gives you a compass and a status box.
We didn't have any problems installing OziExplorer.
OziExplorer offers an online user forum and limited FAQs sections. There is also a tutorial located in the help section of the software.
